On publication in 2009 John Hattie’s Visible Learning presented the biggest ever collection of research into what actually work in schools to improve children’s learning. Not what was fashionable, not what political and educational vested interests wanted to champion, but what actually produced the best results in terms of improving learning and educational outcomes. It became an instant bestseller and was described by the TES as revealing education’s ‘holy grail’. Now in this latest book, John Hattie has joined forces with cognitive psychologist Greg Yates to build on the original data and legacy of the Visible Learning project, showing how it’s underlying ideas and the cutting edge of cognitive science can form a powerful and complimentary framework for shaping learning in the classroom and beyond. Visible Learning and the Science of How We Learn explains the major principles and strategies of learning, outlining why it can be so hard sometimes, and yet easy on other occasions. Aimed at teachers and students, it is written in an accessible and engaging style and can be read cover to cover, or used on a chapter-by-chapter basis for essay writing or staff development. The book is structured in three parts – ‘learning within classrooms’, ‘learning foundations’, which explains the cognitive building blocks of knowledge acquisition and ‘know thyself’ which explores, confidence and self-knowledge. It also features extensive interactive appendices containing study guide questions to encourage critical thinking, annotated bibliographic entries with recommendations for further reading, links to relevant websites and YouTube clips. Throughout, the authors draw upon the latest international research into how the learning process works and how to maximise impact on students, covering such topics as: teacher personality; expertise and teacher-student relationships; how knowledge is stored and the impact of cognitive load; thinking fast and thinking slow; the psychology of self-control; the role of conversation at school and at home; invisible gorillas and the IKEA effect; digital native theory; myths and fallacies about how people learn. This fascinating book is aimed at any student, teacher or parent requiring an up-to-date commentary on how research into human learning processes can inform our teaching and what goes on in our schools. It takes a broad sweep through findings stemming mainly from social and cognitive psychology and presents them in a useable format for students and teachers at all levels, from preschool to tertiary training institutes.

Knowledge is at the core of what it is to be human, the substance which informs our thoughts and determines the course of our actions. Our growing focus on, and understanding of, knowledge and its consequent actions is changing our relationship with the world. Because knowledge determines the quality of every single decision we make, it is critical to learn about and understand what knowledge is. From a 21st century viewpoint, we explore a theory of knowledge that is both pragmatic and biological. Pragmatic in that it is based on taking effective action, and biological because it is created by humans via patterns of neuronal connections in the mind/brain. As humanity moves toward intelligent activity, knowledge, incomplete and imperfect, is the currency of our journey. The better our understanding of this human capacity, the greater the opportunity for making good choices. We begin by laying the foundation with clear definitions of information and knowledge, and levels and types of knowledge, then enter the realms of the voiced and unvoiced, delving into the dimensions of knowledge (explicit, implicit and tacit), engaging tacit knowledge and living through context. From a neuroscience perspective, we explore the magnificent mind/brain, social knowledge and the fallacy of knowledge reuse. Finally, we look at knowledge as values, moving from knowledge to wisdom, the relationship of knowledge and knowing, and sub-personalities as knowledge. We are in a continuous cycle of knowledge creation such that every moment offers the opportunity for the emergence of new and exciting ideas, all waiting to be put in service to an interconnected world. Learn more about this exciting human capacity!

On Teacher Inquiry could be read as an answer to the question, “Teacher research: What’s in it for the students?” This book offers a framework, examples, and practical guidelines for teacher researchers on how to design and conduct individual and collaborative inquiries that build new knowledge and theories about teaching and learning. “What a jewel of a book!” —Ann Lieberman, Senior Scholar at Stanford University “On Teacher Inquiry is for those who cherish what the editors call ‘the habit of inquiry’ because they understand that teaching is always about learning, both theirs’ and their students’.” —Sonia Nieto, Professor Emerita, University of Massachusetts, Amherst “Bringing to life what it means to create a web of meaning for students and collaborative learning communities for teachers, the book portrays how teacher research fosters both reflective teaching and affirmative experiences for diverse students.” —Ann Lewin-Benham, author of Powerful Children “Teacher researchers have long endeavored to bring the heartbeats and breathing of living classrooms to the educational community. This volume continues in that great tradition.” —Bob Fecho, University of Georgia “Both as a resource for those new to teacher inquiry and for the more experienced, the book makes a very important contribution to this exceptional series.” —Susan L. Lytle, Founding Director, Philadelphia Writing Project, Graduate School of Education, University of Pennsylvania

The Intelligent Social Change Journey (ISCJ) is a developmental journey of the body, mind and heart, moving from the heaviness of cause-and-effect linear extrapolations, to the fluidity of co-evolving with our environment, to the lightness of breathing our thought and feelings into reality. Grounded in development of our mental faculties, these are phase changes, each building on and expanding previous learning in our movement toward intelligent activity. We are on this journey together. This is very much a social journey. Change does not occur in isolation. This is the foundation book for the Possibilities that are YOU! series published under Conscious Look Books. These 22 little books are conversational in nature, taking full advantage of your lived experience to share what can sometimes be difficult concepts to grab onto. But, you are ready. We live in a world that is tearing itself apart, where people are out of control, rebelling from years of real and perceived abuse and suppression of thought. Yet, this chaos offers us as a humanity the opportunity to make a giant leap forward! By opening ourselves to ourselves, we are able to fully explore who we are. With that exploration comes a glimmer of hope as we begin to reclaim the power of each and every mind developed by the lived human experience! This little book and the 22 volumes of the Possibilities that are YOU! series are pulled from the larger body of work: The Profundity and Bifurcation of Change, Parts I-V, published in 2017. For those who wish a full in-depth experience of the material, these five books are available on Amazon.
