Excerpt from Geology, Introductory, Descriptive, and Practical, Vol. 2 of 2 Nor is this all. The wide and marked distinction that exists between the general character and appearance of those groups of animals whose remains are found fossil in Secondary rocks and those of a more recent date, is scarcely less remarkable than the fact of the introduction of so many new species and genera. Excerpt from Manual of Geology, Vol. 2 of 2: Theoretical and Practical; Stratigraphical Geology and Palaeontology I have only to add, with my esteemed colleague in his preface to Vol. I., that the changes necessary to bring the science of the last generation into harmony with current knowledge and thought, have been more serious than were anticipated when the revision began. This volume has been entirely re-written, and differs in construction and detail from any known manual; it is hoped that every page will repay the student, if read with care and patience. The Palaeontological analyses through the general text, as well as the tabular deductions, are for the first time fully prepared for English students. Excerpt from Geology, Vol. 2 of 3 Exceptional attention is given to the evolutions of faunas and floras and to their radiations and migrations, while less attention is given to the unrelated features Of the life, however bizarre these may be in themselves. The familiar calling Of the biological roll Under each period is abandoned, and will perhaps be missed; but it has been thought that the mutations of the assemblages of composite life of the great provinces that arose in succession from changes in geographic configuration, are more important as elements in the history of the earth's inhabitants than the classification of life forms as such, par ticularly as such classification is still in a state of transition. The order of treatment of the various forms of life in the several periods is varied according to what is conceived to be their historical impor tance or natural relations. Excerpt from Geology, Vol. 2 of 2: Chemical, Physical, and Stratigraphical In order to follow the descriptive portions of the work relating to foreign geology, it was essential to have 3 Geological Map of Europe. On submitting my views to Mr. Wm. Topley, he very kindly undertook to carry them out in conjunction with Mr. T. G. Goodchild, one of his colleagues on the Geological Survey of Great Britain. My part has been confined merely to the general plan and the introduction of the Volcanoes. The reduction of the Map from the several Home and Foreign Surveys has been entirely the work of the above-named gentlemen, assisted by Mr. Herbert Goodchild 1. I have only to express my entire satisfaction with the Map, - a satisfaction which may, I trust, be shared by my readers. The topographical details are the work of Messrs. W. And A. Keith Johnston, of Edinburgh. The colours adopted resemble for the most part those proposed by the International Geological Congress, with the exception of the Trias, Permian, and siluro-cambrian, for which we have retained the tints more familiar to English Geologists.
