Excerpt from The International Geography The allotment of Space was made after comparing a number of the leading systematic text-books in all languages, and taking account of the area, the population and the degree of accurate knowledge regarding the different countries. The original allocation of space has, however, been slightly altered at the representation of the authors. As the book is intended to appear at first in the English language only, the parts of the world occupied or controlled by the English-speaking nations have been treated more fully than the rest but without giving the excessive promi nence to the native country which is Characteristic of books intended only for school use. The United Kingdom, though occupying much less space than in most English text-books, is treated in greater detail than any other large country. This is because the materials for its geographical description are perhaps more ample and as yet less studied than those of almost any other region. The United States could not be considered in equal detail, but the novel and scientific plan adopted for the Chapter dealing with them makes it perhaps the most instructive in the book, and it is also the longest. The countries of Europe, especially those recognised as Great Powers, have also been treated more fully than is usual in English or American books, and from a point of View that cannot fail to throw new light on their nature and people. No part of the world dominated by Western Civilisation is viewed as a foreign land but is Opened to study from within. Excerpt from A Geography of the World Great circles - The shortest distance from one place in the world to any other place is along a track which would finally bring the traveller back to his starting place after a journey round the world. Each meridian of longitude is half of such a track. Tracks of this kind are called great circles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The World About Us: A Study in Geographical Environment The term 'geographical environment in relation to man, covers all those features of the land in which he lives, in respect of their effects upon his habit of life in whatever connexion. Such features include the relief of the land, whether it be plain, hilly, or mountainous; the nature of its soil, whether fertile or unfertile, well watered or dry; its position, whether insular or continental, and if continental whether coastal or inland; its relation to other lands surrounding it; its climate, vegetation, and mineral wealth. All such features influence man more or less in his social and political condition, in his economic activities, even in his mental and physical development. These influences are in many cases obvious - sometimes so obvious that their importance is apt to be overlooked for that very reason they are worth viewing systematically as a necessary part of the study not only of geography itself, but of history and economics. In other cases they are subtle and indirect, and there comes a point when they may be supposititious or at least incapable of reasoned proof as, for example, when it is attempted to assess the influence of climate upon character. Please note, there are other reprints of this seminal text from other publishers, which have poor formatting - this edition has been reformatted with care and attention to detail. This is the classic reprint of George P. Marsh's 1864 ground breaking work on environmental philosophy and the effect of man on the natural world."The object of the present volume is: to indicate the character and, approximately, the extent of the changes produced by human action in the physical conditions of the globe we inhabit; to point out the dangers of imprudence and the necessity of caution in all operations which, on a large scale, interfere with the spontaneous arrangements of the organic or the inorganic world; to suggest the possibility and the importance of the restoration of disturbed harmonies and the material improvement of waste and exhausted regions; and, incidentally, to illustrate the doctrine, that man is, in both kind and degree, a power of a higher order than any of the other forms of animated life, which, like him, are nourished at the table of bounteous nature." - George Marsh

Excerpt from Geographical Nature Studies: For Primary Work in Home Geography No two subjects of study in the primary grades are more closely and naturally correlated than Nature Study and Observational or Home Geography, for all phenomena within our ken, whether they have to do with man or nature, may be classed under some aspect of the many-sided and comprehensive science of Geography. In the first three school years these subjects are often taught orally; but with most teachers such oral instruction involves an undue amount of labor in preparing the lessons, and not infrequently leads to but vague and unsatisfactory results. This little reading book for primary pupils is designed to lighten the work of the teacher, and by pointing out the often unrecognized relations between familiar phenomena and Home Geography will guide the study of the class to definite and practical ends. The various lessons are adapted to the comprehension of the youngest pupils, and are calculated not only to cultivate habits of accurate observation, but to stimulate a desire for more knowledge and broader views of the world about us. They lead directly up to the point where the more formal study of geography from a text-book begins. The form and construction of these lessons is such that they may be used both as reading exercises and also for topical recitations. Excerpt from A World Geography for Canadian Schools The textual matter has been selected largely on an economic basis. What the people of a given region are doing is the important thing in geography. How Nature exercises her controls over that region, how the people react to their environment, the amount of success or failure - these things count heavily in present - day geography. Products are the result of two things, Nature and Man, reacting the one on the other. The scientific study and explanation of the nature and purpose of things brings geography into the class of reasoning subjects, and definitely eliminates the mere memorization of names of places and lists of things. Where amounts and values have been used to explain size and quantity of production they are for comparative purposes only and are not to be memorized. The latest available figures have been used, unless these were clearly unusual, as they frequently are, for the years 1930 - 3. It is urged that the figures in the text be compared with statistics from such works as the C anada Year Book and the Statesman's Year Book.
