Excerpt from Gazetteer of the Bombay Presidency, 1885, Vol. 18: Part II., Poona In the Dash or eastern plain, where the south-west rain is light and uncertain, the early or khan] harvest is less important than in the west. The chief early cro s are spiked millet or be ri mixed with the hardy tar and early In iau millet or °vairi. Hese are sown in late May or in June on the first so cient rainfall. In good ears they ripen in late September and October; in bad years not ti 1 November. When the early crops are reaped in September and where the land permits, a second or duscia crop is raised. As, after October, rain rarely falls in the hilly west, except a little wheat grown on the eastern fringe, the late or rabi dry-crop harvest is of comparatively little im ortance. In the east of the district which is within the range of t e north-east rains, the late or rabi harvest is more important than the early harvest. There the late crops are sown in October and November and ripen in February and March. They are chiefl sheila and other cold-weather Indian millets and gram, lentils, andy other pulses.
