Excerpt from Esoteric Christianity or the Lesser Mysteries The object of this book is to suggest cer tain lines of thought as to the deep truths underlying Christianity, truths generally overlooked, and only too often denied. The generous wish to Share with all what is precious, to spread broadcast priceless truths, to shut out none from the. Illumina tion of true knowledge, has resulted in a zeal without discretion that has vulgarised Christianity, and has presented its teachings in a form that often repels the heart and alienates the intellect. The command to preach the Gospel to every creature though admittedly of doubtful authenticity - has been interpreted as forbidding the teaching of the Gnosis to a few, and has apparently erased the less popular saying. Should the teachings of Christianity be interpreted only literally, or can there be discovered underlying meanings which are based on the same thread of mystery teaching to be found in other religious traditions?

Annie Besant (née Wood; 1 October 1847 - 20 September 1933) was a British socialist, theosophist, freemason, women's rights and Home Rule activist, educationist, and campaigner for Indian nationalism. Regarded as a champion of human freedom, she was an ardent supporter of both Irish and Indian self-rule. She was also a prolific author with over three hundred books and pamphlets to her credit. As an educationist, her contributions included being one of the founders of the Banaras Hindu University. For fifteen years, Besant was a public proponent in England of atheism and scientific materialism. Besant's goal was to provide employment, better living conditions, and proper education for the poor.
