This eclectic collection of academic essays, creative writing, and mixed media photo-images focuses on myriad representations of disability. In its various components, the volume covers time periods from the seventeenth century to the contemporary era, diverse geographic areas, and genres from plays to novels to short stories to poems to visual depictions. The essays gathered here are grounded in analyses from disability studies, postcolonial studies, and trauma studies, among others, and will be of interest not only to scholars working in these fields, but also to Hispanists and those who pursue interdisciplinary studies.
This dissertation examines the intersection of disability with race and gender in texts that seek to reconfigure or critique nationalism. Previous disability scholarship on the nation has viewed the nation as a concept predicated on the able body, coinciding with feminist and anti-racist critiques positing nationalism as a construct grounded in relations of domination. In contrast, this project asks what happens when cultural workers aligning themselves with liberatory social movements (such as feminism, the Chicana/o Movement, or struggles against globalization and in favor of democratization) reexamine nationalism and citizenship through representations of disability. It argues that although the reformulated nationalisms and transnational subjectivities presented in these texts do not always evade the problems associated with the idea of the nation--notably, its exclusionary constructions of citizenship--there are nonetheless important ethical, epistemological and political implications in the acts of claiming disability and of producing cultural texts that seek to construct communities based on that claim.
For more than forty years, Chicana author Ana Castillo has produced novels, poems, and critical essays that forge connections between generations; challenge borders around race, gender, and sexuality; and critically engage transnational issues of space, identity, and belonging. Her contributions to Latinx cultural production and to Chicana feminist thought have transcended and contributed to feminist praxis, ethnic literature, and border studies throughout the Americas. Transnational Chicanx Perspectives on Ana Castillo is the first edited collection that focuses on Castillo’s oeuvre, which directly confronts what happens in response to cultural displacement, mixing, and border crossing. Divided into five sections, this collection thinks about Castillo’s poetics, language, and form, as well as thematic issues such as borders, immigration, gender, sexuality, and transnational feminism. From her first political poetry, Otro Canto, published in 1977, to her mainstream novels such as The Mixquiahuala Letters, So Far From God, and The Guardians, this collection aims to unravel how Castillo’s writing impacts people of color around the globe and works in solidarity with other third world feminisms.

This collection of essays analyzes shifting notions of self as represented in films and novels written and produced in Spain in the twenty-first century. In doing so, the anthology establishes an international dialogue of multicultural perspectives on trends in contemporary Spain, and serves as a useful reference for scholars and students of Spanish literature and cinema. The primary avenues of exploration include representations of recovery in post-crisis Spain, marginalized texts and identities, silenced subjectivities, intersecting relationships, and spaces of desire and control. The individual chapters focus on major events, such as the global economic crisis, the tension between majority and minority cultures within Spain, and the ongoing repercussions of past trauma and historical memory. In doing so, they build upon theories of identity, subjectivity, gender, history, memory, and normativity.
