The children of these grades should be encouraged to take library books for home reading, and a given amount of such reading should be required throughout the session. To use the library effectively it must contain the classics adapted to the grade, and the teacher must be familiar with its contents, in order to direct the efforts of the children along the proper channels. Excerpt from The Curriculum of the Elementary School: Reprinted From Teachers College Record, Vol. VII, Nos. 1 and 4, Vol. VIII, Nos. 1, 3, and 4 These studies Show, too, a school curriculum in the making. It may not be an ideal curriculum; it may not be a curriculum Of much value to other schools' but it Obviously has Significancein this school. As an indication of how means may be adjusted to ends, of how teachers of widely differing temperaments may be united in purpose, and of how a norm may be utilized to direct concerted action throughout a large institution, the study of the curriculum herein given is particularly worthy of attention. Teachers College has no panacea for pedagogical ills. We have no fixed curriculum to present, and we do not prescribe any particular method of teaching. We do advocate scholarly attainments and richness of life for every teacher; we believe that in any given Situation some courses of study and some methods of teaching are distinctly preferable to others; we would have our students know the meaning of education, under stand its Operations and give professional service in a rational, common-sense way. It is in this spirit that we give to the public this collection of essays. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Curriculum of the Horace Mann Elementary School The curriculum of the Horace Mann Elementary School, as published in five numbers of the teachers college record in 1906 and 1907, has long since been out of date as well as out of print. In response to many requests, therefore, this revision of the course of study is published. The changes from the former curriculum, while they are numer ous, have been the result of a gradual growth during the past six years. The administration of the school leaves the principal and the teachers peculiarly free to modify their methods of teaching and the subject matter of instruction whenever it seems best to do so in View of the best interests of the pupils and in accordance with the best accepted educational practice. The specific changes that have been made are noted in the introductory statements under each subject. The Study of New York City, which is outlined in Chapter IV, is an organized attempt to prepare our pupils to take a more intelligent and enthusiastic interest in civic betterment. As they become better acquainted with local history and tradition and with our best artistic possessions, as they come to realize the great social problems growing out of the industrial life of their city and the organizations of good citizens that are working to solve such problems, we hope that they themselves will soon develop a high type of civic responsibility.
