Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) was a Swedish scientist, nobleman, and theologian who spent his life investigating the mysteries of the soul. Born in Stockholm to a staunchly Lutheran family, he graduated from the University of Uppsala and then traveled to England, Holland, France, and Germany to study with the leading scientists of the time. Between 1743 and 1745 he began to have visions of heaven, hell, and Jesus Christ, which resulted in a stream of books about the nature of God, the afterlife, and the inner meaning of the Bible. He devoted the last decades of his life to studying Scripture and presenting his own unique theology to the world.

Excerpt from Correspondences of the Bible, Vol. 2: The Plants the Minerals and the Atmospheres The correspondence of plants with elements of humanity is less evident than that of animals; for the activity and demonstrativeness of animals force upon us a recognition of their likeness to ourselves, and call out our sympathy with the affections and passions which they exhibit. But plants, on the other hand, are stationary and passive; they seem less like living creatures, and, consequently, less like men. Within the literal language of the Bible is a deeper spiritual meaning that points the way toward a greater understanding of faith and of our own role in the world. Eighteenth-century scientist and theologian Emanuel Swedenborg described that inner language of the Bible as correspondences. More than a century later, John Worcester used Swedenborgs teachings as the foundation for a three-volume road map to the correspondences of the natural world. Correspondences of the Bible remains one of the most highly regarded references on the subject today. In Swedenborgs writings, the structure of heaven is described in terms of a human being with the various communities in heaven corresponding to part of the human body. This volume describes that relationship in detail, giving us a deep, personal view of how every person relates to heaven. It also discusses the process of rebirth in heaven following our death in the physical world, and how we are gradually integrated into the afterlife.
