Trying to find some peace in the City That Never Sleeps"" has always been difficult-even for dead New Yorkers. Rapid development, rising property values, a lack of space, health concerns, and government regulation have all conspired to move the dead from one graveyard to the next. The Graveyard Shift: A Family Historian's Guide to New York City Cemeteries documents the changing landscape of New York City cemeteries, telling the story behind each decision to move, as well as providing the new names and locations of each burial ground. This book, with its complete index, is an invaluable tool for anyone researching New York City ancestors.""

Excerpt from Cemetery Inscriptions: Town of Spencer, New York, 1795-1906 Very soon after the completion of a few isolated cabins within the present limits of the town, a young man of seventeen, Prescott Hobart, was stricken down. His name is first on the long roll of Spencer's dead. He was buried on his father's farm until land was set off from the estate of Joseph Barker, about 1800, for cemetery purposes in Drake Settlement, now Spencer. This is the old cemetery opposite the Presbyterian church. Mr. Andrew Butts says that the first cemetery was on the ground now used by the High School as an athletic field, but that the spot was soon given up because it was not adapted to cemetery purposes. The individuals who transformed American cities and towns in the post-Civil War decades built their homes, with few exceptions, on America's grand avenues, such as New York's Fifth Avenue and Los Angeles's Wilshire Boulevard. This book offers essays on twelve eminent urban residential avenues, each contributed by a different scholar and accompanied by twenty to thirty duotone photographs. Originally published as the catalog for the exhibit at the Octagon Museum of the American Architectural Foundation.
