On the basis of direct analogies with the Gaussian probability density function, an expression is derived to define the density of unit vectors about the mean of a noramlly distributed population. Given a sample of N vectors drawn from such a population, an expression is derived to estimate the population angular standard deviation and the sample vector resultant is shown to be the best indicator of the population mean direction.
