Fault block inliers are hosts to a series of barite-fluorite vein occurrences on the east side of Lake Ainslie, Cape Breton Island. This report first reviews the general geology of the Lake Ainslie area and the geochemistry of local volcanic rocks. It then describes the barite-fluorite veins, their structural geology, and the structural geology of the vein systems. A simple model for fracture development in the area is presented. Results of fluid inclusion, stable isotope, and rare earth element studies are then described and discussed and a genetic model is postulated for the barite-fluorite veins. Finally, exploration criteria are outlined for other areas with possibly similar environments for barite-fluorite veins of the Lake Ainslie type.
