The cost of the pipe Report of Commissioners. line for excavating and construction and laying of pipe was $2,543.92. The cost of the hatchery was $9,005.59. During the year 1897, $1,837.34 were expended on other permanent improvements at the Bayfield hatchery. During the year 1898 there were expended on permanent improvements at the Bayfield hatchery $2,363.78, of which sum $1,180.04 represent the cost of the harn and ice-house, the halance hcing expended for other permanent improvements. An area of ahout twenty-five acres around the hatchery has heen graded and cleared of the innumerahle stumps and logs with which it was incumhered when the commissioners took possession of the property. A heginning has been made in the construction of permanent ponds for adult fish on the lower grounds, adjacent to the hatchery. In 1890, a long flume was huilt through the grounds and divided into ponds for the reception of trout. This temporary structure is still in use, hut the commissioners expect to continue the construction of permanent ponds hanked with stone, which will take the plae of this raceway. The accompanying map of the grounds shows the numher, size and arrangement of the ponds as planned. Three of the ponds arc now made and others will he added during the coming year. E. OSHKOS1I HATCHING STATION. The report of the superintendent for 1897 shows that out of neariy 200,000,000 eggs of wall-eyed plke, which were collected in the spring of that year, and placed in the Milwaukee hatchery, oniy a littie more than 23,000,000 were hatched and distrihuted.
