Excerpt from An Introduction to Historical Geology With Special Reference to North America IT is the author's h0pe that this book may find a place as a class-book dealing with the historical geology portion of a one-year course in general geology, and that it may also serve as a text for special courses in historical geology. An elementary knowledge of what is generally comprised under dynamical and structural geology is presupposed. It is assumed that a proper amount of laboratory and field work will be pursued in connection with the text. Excerpt from A Text-Book of Geology: Intended as an Introduction to the Study of the Rocks and Their Contents This is nominally the fourth edition of a work which first appeared in 1889. But so many additions and alterations have been made that it is practically a new book. The changes were so extensive as to necessitate the resetting in new type of the entire work; and the publishers have taken advantage of this to introduce both larger and clearer type and a larger page. Many new illustrations have also been added, several of these being from photographs taken by myself especially for this book. In Geology, as in all the other sciences, constant and rapid progress is being made. The changes in, and additions to our knowledge of the rocks have been especially great in the strata which form the beginning and the end of the geological series respectively - O-the pre-cambrian and Cambrian Formations at the beginning, and the Glacial Series near the end. Special care has been devoted to bringing these portions of the book up to date. It has been remarked that geology cannot be learnt from boo but it is equally true that geology cannot be learnt without books. Certainly the rocks themselves are the best teachers, but it has taken thousands of years to acquire the power of interpreting the signs of those rocks, and the student must make himself master of the principal facts that the numerous workers in this field of knowledge have already collected. 1 would urge the student to go direct to nature. Excerpt from An Introduction to Geology, Illustrative of the General Structure of the Earth: Comprising the Elements of the Science, and an Outline of the Geology and Mineral Geography of England From the speedy sale of the first edition of the Introduction to Geology without any assistance from the patronage or early notice of the literary journals and reviews, it may be presumed that the work was favourably received. I am therefore en couraged to publish a second enlarged edition under circumstances, in some respects, more favourable to its success.
