DOWNLOAD EBOOKIn early 1986, one of us (D.M.S.) was constructing an artificial intelligence system to design algorithms, and the other (A.P.A.) was getting started in program transformations research. We shared an office, and exchanged a few papers on the systematic development of algorithms from specifications. Gradually we realized that we were trying to solve some of the same problems. And so, despite radical differences between ourselves in research approaches, we set out together to see what we could learn from these papers. That's how this book started: a couple of graduate students trying to cope with The Literature. At first, there was just a list of papers. One of us (D.M.S.) tried to cast the papers in a uniform framework by describing the problem spaces searched, an approach used in artificial intelligence for understanding many tasks. The generalized problem space descriptions, though useful, seemed to abstract too much, so we decided to compare papers by different authors dealing with the same algorithm. These comparisons proved crucial: for then we began to see similar key design choices for each algorithm.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKA variety of optimization algorithms for engineering synthesis are included in a new general-purpose optimization computer program called ADS-1 (Automated Design Synthesis, Version 1). Preliminary testing of all presently available algorithms is conducted utilizing several carefully selected problems of significant size and complexity. These include a problem with 56 design variables and over 3500 inequality constraints. The capabilities and utility of the ADS program coupled with a structural analysis code utilizing finite element techniques is demonstrated and numerical results presented that compare the relative efficiency and reliability of the various optimization algorithms. The number of function and gradient calculations are considered important measures of merit in compring the various algorithms. A comparison of results with another existing optimization computer code is included to document the accuracy and reliability of the ADS program. Preliminary testing of the ADS program demonstrates the flexibility a design engineer would have in selecting an optimization algorithm best suited to solve a particular problem. (Author).

DOWNLOAD EBOOKFive computer programs for synthesizing low sidelobe sum patterns from linear arrays are evaluated in terms of run time and precision. Three of the programs are based on the Dolph Chebyshev synthesis procedure, in which all sidelobes are set at the same level. The other two programs are based on a discretized version of the Taylor synthesis procedure, in which far out sidelobes are allowed to decay. The programs were written for use on small 8 and 16 bit personal computers. It was found that the fastest running programs are also the most precise. The only Chebyshev program that gave satisfactory precision for arrays as large as 100 elements is based on Bresler's nested product algorithm, and the only similarly acceptable Taylor program is based on Shelton's discretized synthesis.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe roots of the project which culminates with the writing of this book can be traced to the work on logic synthesis started in 1979 at the IBM Watson Research Center and at University of California, Berkeley. During the preliminary phases of these projects, the impor tance of logic minimization for the synthesis of area and performance effective circuits clearly emerged. In 1980, Richard Newton stirred our interest by pointing out new heuristic algorithms for two-level logic minimization and the potential for improving upon existing approaches. In the summer of 1981, the authors organized and participated in a seminar on logic manipulation at IBM Research. One of the goals of the seminar was to study the literature on logic minimization and to look at heuristic algorithms from a fundamental and comparative point of view. The fruits of this investigation were surprisingly abundant: it was apparent from an initial implementation of recursive logic minimiza tion (ESPRESSO-I) that, if we merged our new results into a two-level minimization program, an important step forward in automatic logic synthesis could result. ESPRESSO-II was born and an APL implemen tation was created in the summer of 1982. The results of preliminary tests on a fairly large set of industrial examples were good enough to justify the publication of our algorithms. It is hoped that the strength and speed of our minimizer warrant its Italian name, which denotes both express delivery and a specially-brewed black coffee.
