The Burmese army of sixty thousand men, with Maha Bandula at their head, marching down from Donabyo, arrived in the vicinity of Rangoon during the night of the 30th November, and immediately began entrenching themselves in front of the British position. On the morning of the 1st December they began their operations by opening a heavy fire on the British lines, and directiug a furious attack on the outpost of Kemendine. This was promptly repulsed by the garrison (consisting of the 26 th Madras Native Infantry and a detachment of the Madras European Regiment) under the command of Major Yates, but it was only the prelude to a series of attacks which lasted for a week, in which the enemy sustained enormous losses without making the slightest impression.
