Excerpt from Catalogue of the Collection of Coins and Medals of Charles Morris, Esq., Chicago, Ill., A Philadelphia Gentleman, and the Late Richard L. Ashhurst, Esq., Philadelphia, Pa The following pages describe probably the earliest col lection of coins formed in the United States, the father of the present collector being a collector prior to 1830, in which year he attended a sale of coins in the city of Lon don, England, purchasing a number of the choicest items herein offered. The notable items in the collection are: N. E. Shilling; Lord Baltimore shilling and Sixpence, the former probably unique; the Carolina Elephant half penny; 17 85 Vermont cent; rare Washington coins and medals; the early Ameri can medals, mostly contemporaneous impressions, and especially rare is the medal for the Battle of Germantown, medal of Truxton, the Fame medal of Washington. The 1793 wreath cent is a gem fit for any cabinet. In the Morris collection will be found several items of interest to Canadians, especially the Peace Medal of Queen Victoria given to an Indian chief by the then Prince of Wales, afterwards King Edward VII, Communion tokens and early American medals. Every coin or medal is guaranteed genuine, and this holds good indefinitely. Catalogues marked with the price of what each lot sold for will be supplied-after the sale for 50 cents. I will execute bids for the usual 10 per cent. Of the amount purchased. The auctioneers will execute bids free of commission, but assume no responsibility and require payment to be made before delivery.
